Ofsted Outstanding

Links With Other Schools

At Babington we are very proud of our work with other schools.  We firmly believe that there are many benefits for the children in our community and indeed the staff in our schools if we collaborate and indeed lead on projects with colleagues in different schools.  Our three key links areas are Pupil Premium, Sport Premium and languages.

The table below highlights the schools that we are currently supporting and/or working with.

Babington Closing the Gap Partnership

One area of our work at Babington that has had national recognition over the past few years is our Pupil Premium work.  We were awarded the secondary school regional Pupil Premium Award in 2013 and this was presented to us by the Rt. Hon. Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister.  Closing the gap for our disadvantaged students is a core drive at Babington and indeed at many schools across the city.  As such we devised a partnership programme and invited schools to join us as we believe working together is the key to really moving things forward for the Leicester community.

The partnership is really about working together to get to the root of the issues around the FSM gap and jointly developing strategies and interventions to challenge that gap.  In addition to our joint practice development projects the partnership programme involves the following:

  • Pupil premium conference for leaders/school Pupil Premium Champions
  • Numeracy Challenge: conference for 15 PP students in a target intervention group focussing on maths (Transport/food included)
  • Literacy Challenge: Cultural experience for 15 PP students in a target intervention group.  Formalised language work to go alongside this to target literacy improvements
  • Celebration event for 15 PP intervention group
  • Online blog – updated by all partner schools on a weekly rota
  • Babington tool kit
  • ½ termly co-ordination meetings for PP Champion
  • Termly newsletter to share good practice
  • ½ day meeting with Sara Fletcher to support current PP work in the school
  • Holiday Challenge booklet provided for each school
  • Star Challenge Academy student pin badges for PP intervention group
  • Babington Maths Sprints resources

Primary PE Provision

We are currently working with 10 Primary schools to raise the attainment in Primary PE by creating a sustainable offer, delivered over 2 years.  PE teaching staff go into each Primary school for a 3 hour slot every week and deliver high quality PE lessons from foundation up to year 6. Primary staff started by observing lessons and assisting the teacher and in some cases now are confidently teaching PE to their own classes.  We have planned schemes of learning covering the areas stated in the PE national curriculum that also address the recent changes. The provision has been judged as outstanding by Ofsted as was the teaching of Babington PE staff.  The overriding aim of the project is to ensure that Primary staff and skilled and equipped to deliver outstanding PE lessons themselves.

Why this offer is so popular – Feedback

“An excellent way of supporting the teaching of PE. Thanks for all your time and skill - it was really useful” (Glebelands)

“It is all going very well. We had Ofsted last week and I had a session with the lead inspector to answer questions about funding, how it was spent and the impact. They were pleased with what we are doing” (Mowmacre)

“The teaching staff who have been involved so far have found it beneficial and the children have loved having the Babington staff come in. Thanks!” (Wolsey House)

Primary Languages Provision

In order to support ongoing national curriculum changes MFL teachers from Babington are working with primary schools in the local area to deliver French to KS2 students. We are supporting the primary schools by offering flexible models of delivery, in addition to helping schools to build future capacity for study of modern foreign languages, which in turn which would look to provide a sound base for pupils for future modern language study at KS3.

Students are taught to understand and respond to spoken and written language, and learn to speak in French with increased confidence and fluency. There is also a focus on the delivery of French phonics, which aids students’ ability to access the language and builds their confidence in pronouncing unfamiliar words. Through focussing on basic grammar concepts MFL is also used as a vehicle to improve literacy and through exploring authentic texts students are given the ability to learn about the wider world.
