Topics Studied in Years 7, 8 and 9 – KS3

At Babington we believe that it is important to deliver a curriculum that is broad and balanced which offers opportunities for new skill development. Within KS3 PE, students build upon the fundamental skills (e.g. throwing/ catching/ running) that they have developed throughout KS1/2, further developing core and advanced skills across a range of wide range of different sports and physical activities. Each scheme (sport) will begin with core skills and, as schemes are interleaved throughout years 7-9, students will build upon the foundations of previous learning/progress and onto more advanced skills, as they demonstrate mastery.

Sports visited in KS3:

Invasion games: Football, Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Handball, Dodgeball
Net and wall games: Badminton, Volleyball
Striking and Fielding games: Rounders, Softball, Cricket
Gymnastics: Floor Gymnastics, Trampolining, Vaulting
Fitness activities: Boxercise, Strength building, Circuit training
Athletics activities: Sprints, middle distance, long distance, throws (Javelin, shot, discus), Jumps (Long, High and Triple).

Examinations Offered and Topics Studied in years 10 and 11 - KS4

Within KS4 PE, students apply and consolidate the core and advanced skills that they have developed throughout KS3, building further upon this by developing an understanding of rules and regulations, tactical awareness and decision making, specific to the sport.

Students can also opt to take the new OCR Cambridge National Sport Studies and/or Sports Science course. Our Cambridge National qualifications in both Sport Studies and Sports Science, provide opportunities for students with an interest or passion for sport/ physical activity, to further develop their knowledge and understanding of this area. Within these courses, students are provided with opportunities to further develop knowledge and understanding of a range of different areas across sport/ physical activity, ranging from sport as a business, to how sport can influence people’s lives.

Trips, Visits and Residential Opportunities

Students have the chance to be selected to take part in our rewards trips to watch or visit elite sporting events or take part in physical activities.
There is also opportunity for examination students to visit a National Centre of excellence and partake in a PGL residential. These students also have leadership opportunities allowing students to deliver sessions in our feeder primary schools
Students have numerous opportunities to represent school teams in league, cup and on- off tournaments at local and national level.

Performance Pathways

To enable our students to compete in sports outside of school we offer an extensive extra-curricular timetable. This has a range of programmes that they can participate in after school at Babington. These clubs can link with local sports teams and clubs, giving them the opportunity to join a performance pathway.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

We believe that the PE Faculty plays a major role in the provision of activities outside School hours.  All students are encouraged to attend and our badminton clubs runs before school from 7.30am – 8.15am. Our other clubs run after school 3.00pm – 4.00pm. We also work hard to build sports teams, leading to opportunities for our students to compete against other schools in a wide range of sports.

Helping Your Child with Homework

Encourage pupils to attend extra-curricular activities.
